Man became the object, first, of general dealings of God under Noah; next, of His special ways in the calling of Abraham and of his family. This is what made the gospel to be so sweet and precious, and, what is more, absolutely necessary, if he would escape certain and eternal ruin. There is no simple mind that can evade the plain force of this last expression. IT IS DIFFICULT to make men understand that the salvation of the gospel is not by works but entirely by grace, that it is not presented to men as the reward of their own endeavors, but is given to them freely upon their accepting it by an act of simple faith or trust in Jesus Christ. I mean to keep to our text this morning, and if any shall charge me with an omission of the work of the Spirit, or a failure to trace all saving faith to the electing grace of God, I shall bear the charge without murmuring, only saying that my soul rejoices as much as that of any man living in the work of the Spirit of God; and, that the electing love of God and his determinate purposes are precious truths to me. [b.] The language of faith says, Do nothing. and how shall they hear without a preacher? Let the cross pass. Was not this our own particular case? This was no question of legal obedience, although the law came from Jehovah. For the Jew stumbling at Jesus Christ going about by works trying to establish a righteousness before God.Paul declares they just haven't made it and can't make it for they have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God and Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes. If one may so say, He thus holds the man, instead of letting the man presume that he is holding fast the truth. John 5:39. Thus, their good works must outweigh their bad works. Not just saving faithbut throughout our walk with God, the totality of Gods Word becomes real in our lives as we appropriate it. How far? It was all a matter of law and achievement. His pathway follows; and he shows that the very troubles of the road become a distinct matter of boast. Such is the principle.
