Scattered throughout the state, WSAs include some of Montana's wildest, most intact, and most beloved public lands. (32), Comments On the trail: Hiking the Greenhorns, in the Blue Mountains. The apex of the range, Vinegar Hill, near the eastern end of the Greenhorns, tops out at a modest 8,131 feet. Once upon a time there were homesteads and cattle ranches in some areas out here but over time, they were abandoned and this land was incorporated into the Wet Mountains section of the San Isabel National Forest . Whatever the reason, Greenhorn Mountain's inclusion in the wilderness system was a welcome addition. The wilderness was established by the Oregon Wilderness Act of 1984. From the parking lot there are two trailheads. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. In both ranges the boundary between these strata were prime places to dig for gold, and the Greenhorns, like the Elkhorns, were scoured thoroughly by miners.
